The recent Fayette County Science and Engineering Fair on Tuesday, Jan. 27, was not just about winning and losing, but about the hundreds of middle school and high school students who now have a hands-on experience with science and engineering and some of the challenges that face our society.

I want to publicly congratulate Dr. Sharon Boyer and the science staff of the Fayette County Schools. The student projects were excellent, the judging was well-run, and the staff was more than helpful. It was a wonderful and encouraging afternoon of judging and working with the schools. I commend Dr. John DeCotis for running one of the finest school systems in the state.

I got involved with the science fair though the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce Partners in Education (PIE) Committee, the Coweta-Fayette Georgia Tech Club, and Prudential Georgia Realty.

As the president of the Georgia Tech Club, we will continue to sponsor and promote science education and encourage the 1,200 alumni who live in Fayette County to participate in our schools as judges, coaches, and speakers to help make math and science real for the future of our students.

See the club website at www.GaTechCF.org to sign up.
