Residents of two homes in Peachtree City have had to find other living quarters following two smoky fires that were extinguished with no injuries, according to the Peachtree City Fire Department.

The first fire happened Jan. 25 at 34 Dover Square, and the second at 26 Fairway Lane on Jan. 28.

The resident at Dover Square had lit some candles in a downstairs room and then went back upstairs to answer a telephone call, fire officials said.

Within a few moments, a smoke alarm sounded, and when one of the residents investigated, they found a small fire in the lower level room, fire officials reported.

“When the fire department arrived a significant amount of smoke was found coming from the residence. The fire was extinguished in approximately 20 minutes. The structure received a minimum amount of structural damage, but unfortunately had heavy amounts of personal content damage and destruction. There were no injuries,” a fire official said.

In the Fairway Lane fire, “the fire department responded and quickly moved to extinguish a chimney fire which started in the flue portion of the chimney and burned through a portion of the roof. There was not a working smoke detector in the home,” fire officials said.

According to the fire department news release, “The fire was discovered by an upstairs occupant who was asleep and awakened by the smell of smoke, who then proceeded downstairs to wake another occupant sleeping in the living room. Both occupants were renters and fortunate to have awakened in time to get out. The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes as well.”

Both fires have been determined to be accidental in nature, fire officials said, and both of these structures are uninhabitable until repair or reconstruction has been completed.
