Lost in Translation?

"Spare the rod and spoil the child."

I don't know about the Greek translation by doofusses, but didn't the original translation of whatever language the Yiddish wrote really say something like this:

If one doesn't take the time to speak civily to their child about proper discipline and then teach them just how to act, then the child will be a hellion!
