A house fire Monday afternoon outside Fayetteville left no injuries but did cause extensive damage to the residence at 120 Smokemont Drive near Banks Road.

Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Pete Nelms said the homeowner received a call from the alarm company alerting her of an issue with the alarm system. The homeowner went home to check the house and found the fire, Nelms said.

None of the five residents was home at the time, he said. Firefighters were on the scene within five minutes of being notified of the fire at 2:29 p.m., said Nelms.

Nelms said the damage to the house was extensive, with most of the damage centered upstairs on the right side of the house and in the area downstairs immediately below. A number of household items were able to be moved by firefighters into the garage area. Nelms added that firefighters were searching for the residents’ cat that was still unaccounted for.

The family has no relatives in the area, though a Red Cross representative was on the scene before the fire was extinguished, Nelms said.

The cause of the fire will not be known until an assessment of the incident is completed.

Nelms thanked Fayetteville Fire Department for its quick response to the fire.
