Participate in Boy Scout - Scouting for Food 2009

The Flint River Council of the Boy Scouts Of America is pleased to announce that the annual Scouting for Food Drive for 2009 is under way. Publix Supermarkets is the sponsor this year. They provided the food bags for the scouts to use to pick up non-perishable food goods; such as peanut butter, soups canned meats, pastas, vegetables.

Scouts from the eight counties (Coweta, Fayette, Butts, Henry, Spalding, Pike Lamar and Upson) that make up the Flint River Council, will be walking around in their assigned areas to pick up food.  On Saturday, February 7th, the donated food in the Coweta areas will be collected, sorted, boxed then delivered to the Salvation Army pantry on Jefferson Parkway; they  serve the families in need from  Coweta County. The scouts participating with this service project will receive a the patch thanks to the Publix sponsorship”

The Boy Scouts of America was designed to instill in the nation's youth the moral and ethical principles and the habits, practices, and attitudes that are conducive to good character, citizenship, and health. The Boy Scouts programs pass on doing a ‘Good Turn’ and giving ‘Goodwill’ to Cub Scouts aged 7 to 10 and Boy Scouts aged 10 to 18 as a part of everyday life,” said Funk. “As Boy Scouting program reaches it's 99th year, the ‘Do a Good Turn Daily’, this food drive occurs during the anniversary week in February. The boys understand that their hard work pays off knowing they are helping so many others in need. You don’t have to wait to join the scouting program, if interested stop by this Saturday or call 770-227-4556 for more information. These programs foster in the youth of our state characteristics that strengthen communities and contribute to the health and welfare of Georgia's less fortunate citizens.

"The scouts in Coweta are beginning this year's food drive a week earlier than the remaining Flint River Districts due to the difference in the School Calendar. Coweta scouts would be leaving school on the 13th." Verna Funk, Scouting for Food Chair; "we look forward towards more participation before the scouts take vacation the following week."

"Some scouts will be going door to door on January 31st, such as the Cub Scouts from Pack 53 in parts of Sharpsburg, Turin from Hwy 16 to Linch Road, to Elders Mill area, east to Wagon Wheel Trail and back up to Peeks Crossing; will be going door to door on January 31st. The pack will sort and delivery the following Saturday, 2/7 after their Pine Wood Derby Races." Funk notes that "Pack 51 from the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints will be starting from the 34 Bypass and work up Roscoe Road to the Windsor and Florence Road areas as well."

Coweta residents are asked to leave the bag they received at the end of their driveways on Friday night, February 6th, so the scouts can pick up the food without ringing your doorbell early Saturday morning. The Boy Scouts will be knocking as they scout around their designated areas. If you were bagged and your donation was not picked up or due to the size of Coweta where your area was not covered call the Salvation Army and we will arrange for a pick up. To contribute to the Salvation Army or receive food, please call Carlus Philip at the Salvation Army 770-251-8181.
