Starting Thursday, January 8th, work crews will begin rehabilitating East Broad Street in Newnan from the Pinson Street/ Farmer Street intersection out to the new roundabout.

The schedule for work will begin with milling operations to remove excess asphalt from the road.  Milling operations should be finished by Friday, January 9th, East Broad Street will generally remain open for traffic with pilot vehicles being used to help with traffic control.

Saturday through Tuesday of next week, utility work will be done.  Again, East Broad Street will generally remain open for traffic with traffic being diverted around the areas where the utility work is being done.  Base construction is scheduled to be completed by Saturday, January 17th.  We will continue to provide updates to the schedule as work progresses and any additional information that may be of interest to the motoring public using East Broad Street.  Every effort will be taken to ensure traffic is accommodated as best as possible.

Atlanta Paving & Concrete Construction, Inc., the general contractor, expects to complete the project around February 13th.

Overall, the rehabilitation of East Broad Street consists of constructing a stabilized base course by pulverizing the existing pavement structure,  mixing with Portland cement to a depth of 10 inches and paving a binder and final surface course of asphalt on the prepared foundation.  Transitions to side roads, acceleration/ deceleration lanes, and tie-ins to driveways will be constructed to the proper width and in such a manner to establish a smooth ingress and egress at each location.  Final striping and pavement markings, to be reflective thermoplastic, include double yellow lines in the center and white lines on the edges, Georgia DOT type crosswalks and 24” stop bars.  In addition, ADA compliant ramps will be installed throughout the limits of the project.

The rehabilitation of East Broad Street is similar to the work done to Martin Luther King, Junior Drive in late 2008.  "Over the years, both Martin Luther King, Junior Drive and East Broad Street, like many roads in Newnan, have been overlaid with numerous layers of asphalt.  Due to the excessive amount of existing asphalt and the overall condition of these roads, the city decided to rehabilitate these roads utilizing a technique known as Full Depth Reclamation (FDR)", says Michael Klahr, Public Works Director and City Engineer for Newnan.  "FDR is an attractive method for rehabilitating existing roads due to its reduced life cycle costs, low environmental impact, and ease of construction", continues Klahr.
