The reduced hours at the Peachtree City Library and the Kedron Fieldhouse and Aquatic Center haven’t even been implemented yet.

But that hasn’t kept citizens from voicing their concerns about the changes.

The library’s shortened hours will start in the new year while Kedron’s are being postponed until mid-February so as not to impact youth basketball season.
Yet already the city’s leisure services division has received calls and comments, many of which are concerned about the shortening of the evening hours at the library, said Leisure Services Director Randy Gaddo.

On weekdays the library will now close at 8 p.m. instead of 9 p.m. except for Wednesdays when it closes at 6 p.m. The library will also open one hour later on weekdays at 10 a.m. instead of 9 a.m.
Many of the concerns from citizens are about the impact on students who use the library for homework assignments after school, Gaddo said.

There was some initial discussion about closing the library on Sundays but that has been shelved for now since it’s the only library in the county that’s open on Sundays at all. The library is open from 1-5 p.m. Sundays.

The estimated savings for closing the library an additional 12 hours a week is $28,841.

Closing Kedron an additional eight hours a week will save an estimated $16,389. Starting February 13 the aquatic center and fieldhouse will close at 9 p.m. instead of 10 Monday through Friday and will close at 7 p.m. instead of 10 p.m. on Saturdays.
