Work is progressing on the widening of Ga. Highway 54 to four lanes.

Much of the work now has to do with the bridges over Line Creek and the CSX railroad track. The first half of the new bridge over the railroad track is already being used, and construction is well underway on the other half of the bridge, with 90 percent of the bridge deck complete, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Work on the new bridge over Line Creek is more than 95 percent complete also, officials said.

The CSX bridge, in particular, was one of the main choke points for congestion because it could only accommodate two lanes of traffic. This particularly slowed westbound traffic heading to Coweta County during the afternoon drive time.

The project is due to be completed by this summer. Although this infrastructure has been years in the making and is viewed by many as long overdue, the construction has at times caused traffic slow-ups itself.

Once the Hwy. 54 widening is complete, the DOT hopes to begin work on the widening of Ga. Highway 74 south to four lanes from Hwy. 54 all the way down to Ga. Highway 85.
