Season ends this weekend, tournaments start on Monday

The only thing that can make a win over a rival any better is if it is done in a close game. On Tuesday night, McIntosh’s boys edged out Sandy Creek, which vaulted the Chiefs over the Patriots in the sub-region standings, while Our Lady of Mercy’s boys picked up their first ever win over Landmark Christian School, setting up a tie in the sub region between the two teams.

The Chiefs beat the Patriots 50-46 and got 12 points from Marcus Chisholm. The win gave McIntosh a 6-3 sub-region record with a game against Northgate on Friday to close it out. If the Chiefs take care of business against a Northgate team that has yet to pick up a region win, they will be the number two team in the sub-region when they enter next week’s tournament.

Sandy Creek’s girls, 10-1 in the sub-region, defeated McIntosh, who is 3-8 in the sub-region 58-39. The Lady Patriots were led by Morganne Campbell’s 22 points, while Lynsey Paschal chipped in 12 points. McIntosh was led by 11 points from Elyse Chubb while Erin Justice added nine.

Our Lady of Mercy was led by junior Buck Caldwell’s 19 points as they held off the War Eagles and won 66-63. It was the Bobcats’ second region win in a row and now they are tied in sub-region records with Landmark at 3-7. The Lady War Eagles defeated Our Lady of Mercy 49-29 earlier in the evening with Christian Hunnicutt leading Landmark in scoring with 21 points.

Starr’s Mill’s boys and girls swept past Union Grove on Tuesday, picking up region wins along the way. The Lady Panthers won 31-28 behind 14 points from Emily Woodward. They have won three games in a row after a stretch that saw the team go 3-6. With one game to go, they are tied with Fayette County’s girls in region record (6-5) but lead in overall record. If they win their final region game of they year, they will have a better seed than the Lady Tigers. The Starr’s Mill boys defeated Union Grove 48-42 with Mark Harris scoring 14 points and Bo Tiller chipping in 11. With a 3-8 region record and one game to go, the Panthers appear stuck as the fifth seed, which should mean an opening game in the tournament against Lovejoy, a team that has defeated the Panthers twice this season.

East Coweta’s boys fell to Lovejoy on Tuesday night 68-54. It was the fifth region loss in a row for the Indians. The Lady Indians picked up their second region win of the season by handing Lovejoy a 36-32 loss. Shasta Ellison led the team with 15 points and six rebounds. With a 2-9 record in the region, East Coweta can’t catch anybody and will likely open next week’s tournament with a game against Starr’s Mill or Fayette County.

Whitewater’s boys and girls got swept by Creekside. The Lady Wildcats lost 62-43, meaning a winless region record thus far with one game remaining. The boys (4-5 in the sub-region) got 24 points from Zach Scurry on Tuesday night but fell to Creekside 65-62. Their final sub-region game of the season is against Woodward Academy, with whom they are tied, so Friday’s game is of major importance when it comes to seeding in next week’s tournament. If they win and Sandy Creek loses, the Wildcats could clinch the third spot in the sub-region.

Northgate’s boys and girls both lost to Woodward Academy on Tuesday. The Lady Vikings lost 56-43 with Carly Wynn leading the team in scoring with 14 points. The team, which has lost two games in a row, has a 4-5 record in the sub-region with one game remaining. With a win against McIntosh on Friday, Northgate could tie Creekside’s Lady Seminoles in sub-region record but Creekside’s overall record is better which would be a tie-breaker. Northgate’s boys lost to Woodward 62-51 with Trey Hudson leading the team in scoring with 14 points. The Vikings are winless in the sub-region and can’t catch anybody in the standings.

The region tournaments start on Monday with Our Lady of Mercy hosting 5-A, Whitewater hosting 4-AAAA and Mundy’s Mill hosting 4-AAAAA.
