A Liberty, S.C., man was arrested by Fayetteville Police Monday at a Sunderland Circle home after fighting with and injuring a female resident.

Michael Everrett Gwinn, 42, was charged with simple battery, obstruction of an officer and obstruction of a person making an emergency telephone call, according to Fayetteville Police spokesperson Steve Crawshaw.

Crawshaw said the victim was on the phone with a third party when a fight began between Gwinn and the woman. The third party called the 911 operator who, in turn, called the residence, Crawshaw said. The female victim answered but Gwinn took the phone from her, said Crawshaw.

Crawshaw said officers arrived at the Sunderland Circle residence to find the woman with visible marks on her face and neck. The exact nature of the relationship, if any, between Gwinn and the woman was not immediately known, he said.

Officers reported that Gwinn was heavily intoxicated. He approached officers aggressively and was slurring his speech as he cursed at them and was having difficulty walking and standing, Crawshaw said.

Crawshaw said officers were able to put the 6-foot-4-inch, 280-pound Gwinn to the ground while he was kicking, struggling and pulling away from them. It was at that point that officers used a Taser without the darts to attempt to subdue him, Crawshaw said.

Gwinn was handcuffed and, by policy when a Taser is used, was checked by paramedics who were called to the scene. Gwinn remained uncooperative and tried to pull away even as he was being checked, Crawshaw said.
