The Fayette County Historical Society honored its docents at the December Christmas Tea.

Among those who have volunteered for 20 years include Bobby Kerlin, John Lynch, Frances Reeves, Mary Dean and Sandra Wood.

The non-profit organization began in 1971 as out outgrowth of those working on the county's sesquicentennial or its 150th birthday.

The Margaret Mitchell Library moved from the building it had constructed in 1948 to a new facility and in 1988 the county allowed the historical society to use the former library facility. It was named the Margaret Mitchell Research Center in honor of the namesake of the original library.

It houses both archeological and genealogical information on Fayette County, as well as references to the War Between The States, as it relates to Georgia and to Fayette County.

The docents, along with other volunteers, man the society at least once a month for a three to four hour period. It is open on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., on Thursday mornings from10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

You are welcome to come in and browse any time.

It is located on Lee Street behind the American Legion Post House.
