In the Bowdon Invitational, Northgate placed fifth overall and had four weight class champions in the tournament. The champs were Paul Sanford (119), Josh Crager (125), Brandon Jordan (130) and Drew Garner (275). Scott Ricker (145) placed second.

The McIntosh High School wrestling team traveled to East Paulding High School to compete in the 16 Team Crossbone Classic last weekend and came home with three medalists. Seniors Matt Penn (145) and Alex Shoemaker (160) as well as sophomore Matt Carroll (189) earned fourth place finishes.

“I am happy with how we competed at the tournament,” said Coach Nick Bellantoni after the tournament. “This was a tough competition and provided us with a good test as we head into the state qualifiers this weekend. I want to make special mention of our Matt Bozone (130). Matt suffered a broken arm in his first match of the tournament and will be unable to compete in the State Qualifier next weekend. He had really stepped up this year and was having a terrific season. It is hard knowing that he will not be on the mat this weekend.”

After first five rounds of the tournament each weight class was cut down from 16 to the top 8 competitors. Nine McIntosh wrestlers moved into the round of the Elite Eight including Jarrod Chamblee (103), Alan Sarvis(119), Jessy Toscano (125), Carl Scheumann (140), Penn (145), Landis Ford (152), Shoemaker (160), Scott Ritter (171) and Carroll (189).

Penn, Shoemaker and Carroll won their matches and moved into the Final Four medal round. Carroll finished the Tournament with five wins and one loss while Shoemaker and Penn each went 4–3. Chamblee had three wins and two losses as did Sarvis while Ritter was 3 –3. Toscano was 2– 4, Scheumann was 2–3 and Landis Ford was 1 –5.

Ford and Penn shared team honors with the quickest pin at 20 seconds in the first period. Shoemaker competed in the most dramatic match of the day with a quick reversal and pin of his Pebblebrook opponent deep in the second period. Scheumann also had an exciting match against his Lithia Spring opponent who is ranked fourth in AAAA in the 140 pound weight class. Losing by one point with 20 seconds left in the match, Scheumann went for a leg takedown, but was blocked by a strong cross-face by the Lithia Springs wrestler who took the final two points of the match.

The Chiefs and Vikings will be back in action today and tomorrow in the Region Qualifier for State at Whitewater High School.

East Coweta placed seventh in the Crossbone Classic and had two second place finishers, two third place finishers and two fourth place finishers. Taking second in the tournament were Blake Earich (112) and Tim Johnson (189), while Kirby Collier (130) and Jack Roberts (140) placed third and Dylan Crumbley (125) and Christian Flavin (215) placed fourth.

The Indians will compete in the area 4-AAAA state qualifier at Fayette County High School on Saturday.
