Annual benefit concert to benefit Fayette Senior Services This Saturday Fayette Senior Services will celebrate its 10th Annual Music Benefit Concert with the added premier of the Senior Idol Talent Contest. Based on the popular television show, “American Idol,” Fayette County’s most talented singers and musicians age 50 and older will compete for the title of “Senior Idol.”Auditions for the Senior Idol talent competition will be held Saturday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at F.A. Sams Auditorium in Fayetteville. Groups and individuals age 50 and older were invited to try out. The Senior Idol winners will be announced and perform at the music concert following the auditions. The fun will continue Saturday night with Fayette Senior Services’ 10th Annual Music Benefit Concert which starts at 7 p.m. The featured musical guest at this year’s concert will be the popular group, Those Guys, with a special performance by the Fayette County High School Chorus Quartet. The contest judges include notable broadcast personalities, performers, and music educators including Eugene Tompkins a disc jockey for WRFG Atlanta 89.3 FM, Marina Kolbe a feature reporter for Georgia Public Broadcast and former CNN anchor, singer/composer Rick Massengale, music director Janice Folsom, the choral director at Fayette County High School, Dr. Richard Bell, founder and conductor of the Southern Crescent Symphony and Alison Kirkland, chorale director at Sarah Harp Minter School. Former Fayette County resident, Forrest Cate, the program director for First United Methodist Church of Marietta, will emcee this year’s event. Those Guys is comprised of Rick Massengale, pianist, Bill Nelmes, acoustic bass/vocalist, Ira Polk, saxophone, and Rex Butner, drums. Those Guys perform for the Music with Friends series, private events, and have recently opened for “The Manhattan Transfer” at the Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater in Peachtree City. Also entertaining audiences tomorrow night will be the Fayette County High School Chorus Quartet. The quartet has performed many times for the annual benefit concert and is always a crowd pleaser. The talented quartet is known for reviving memories from the doo-wap era of music and will perform many popular melodies. Fayette Senior Services is a non-profit organization that provides a broad scope of life-enhancing services to Fayette County residents aged 50 and older. Fayette Senior Services offers community seniors the opportunity to improve their quality of life and maintain their independence through programs such as Adult Day Services, Information and Referrals, Meals on Wheels, Senior Center, Transportation Services, In-Home Services, Case Management, and a variety of cultural, educational, and social activities for more active seniors. Proceeds from the concert help fund these services. The first place winner will receive $250 cash, followed by $100 and $50 Savings Bonds for the second and third place winners.
