Let me assure the writer of the Free Speech “disappointment” piece that no one feels worse than those of us directly affected by this year’s one-time cancellation of the PCFD Santa Run — the firefighters of your department!

It goes without saying that the event is a heartwarming experience and one in which those involved are all-consumed for almost the entire month of December.

Sadly, budget cuts for this department necessitated over $134,000 savings in a multitude of areas. The chief’s decision was made to forego this event based on the present and possibly future finances.

On the positive side and not mentioned by the writer is our sponsorship of a modified Santa Run at Station 81 (Paschall Road) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 14 and Dec. 21.

Santa and his elves will be there for children of all ages, and we continue to solicit canned goods or non-perishable items for our local church’s Christmas charity needs as well as the Toys for Tots Drive sponsored by our Marine Corps.

Please come out, say hi to Santa, speak with our firefighters, view our apparatus and facilities and bring a toy and/or canned goods.
