2 neighborhoods hit Monday; 2 others targeted in recent past

Peachtree City police are hoping the public can tip them off to the person or persons who stole mail from more than 30 mailboxes in the Hampton Green and Morallion Hills area Monday.

A bag of mail was found yesterday behind the Peachtree East Shopping Center just outside the city limits on Ga. Highway 54 East, police said. It was recovered by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, police said.

Police believe the mail was stolen sometime after 10 a.m. and before 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8. Police are seeking anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in those areas or anyone who may have witnessed the mail being abandoned behind the shopping center.

Police are also investigating similar thefts that occurred in the Summer Brooke and Rockspray Ridge subdivision about two weeks ago. In those thefts mail awaiting pickup from the postal service was taken.
Police suggest that residents drop off their outgoing mail at an approved location instead of using their mailboxes because the red flag can invite criminals to steal the mail.

Area police in recent months have become aware of criminal organizations that steal personal identity information such as mail to commit identity fraud. In some cases, the thieves break into automobiles and have passed up stealing stereos and other valuables in a bid to sneak away with account numbers and other information that can be used for fraudulent means.

Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to call police at 770-631-2510 or the crime and narcotics information hotline at 770-487-6010. Callers may remain anonymous.
