A warrant has been issued for a Jonesboro man after he nearly ran down a Fayetteville Police officer and two women Sunday in an incident at Cobblestone Apartments.

Jonesboro resident Lazarius Phams is wanted on charges of aggravated assault on an officer, obstruction and reckless driving, according to Fayetteville Police spokesman Lt. Glenn Askew.

Askew said the officer was in the apartment complex parking lot, speaking with the women about a crime that had occurred in Clayton County. It was during that time that Phams drove up in an aggressive and unsafe manner, Askew said. Believing that the three might be struck by the vehicle, the officer drew his gun and yelled at Phams to stop, said Askew.

Phams complied and, after exiting the vehicle, was ordered to the ground. Phams began resisting, pushed the officer away and eventually got to his feet and began running, Askew said.

The officer issued a verbal command to stop and subsequently fired his taser. Phams was struck but the taser was ineffective, Askew said, because it only made contact with the hooded sweatshirt he was wearing.

Phams was able to elude officers who gave chase through the apartment complex.
