Senate, appeals court races on tap

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday so voters can help decide three outstanding statewide races.

Voters must go to their normal polling place to vote, officials have said.

The biggest race on the ballot is between incumbent Saxby Chambliss and Democratic challenger Jim Martin for a seat in the U.S. Senate. The race has drawn national attention because of what hangs in the balance: a Democratic win would put the party close to a 60 vote majority which would allow it to avoid filibusters from Republicans.

There are two other races on the ballot. Sara Doyle and Mike Sheffield are facing off for a seat on the Georgia Court of Appeals to replace the retiring John H. Ruffin. And a seat on the Georgia Public Service Commission is up for grabs between Republican Lauren W. “Bubba” McDonald Jr. and Democrat Jim Powell. They are fighting for the seat vacated by Angela Elizabeth Speir, who has declined to run for re-election.

The Public Service Commission regulates utilities that operate in Georgia.
