It’s the issue that won’t go away and threatens to become an election topic later this year. From board meeting to vents on the Web, Fayette’s parents are upset at the number of illegal students attending the county’s public schools.

Last week, the board issued a press release outlining what steps were being taken to prevent out of county students jumping district lines and heading to Fayette.

But the press release just seems to have added fuel to the fire as numerous residents have complained in person and on The Citizen’s Web site about the school system’s inefficiency in dealing with the problem.

Specifically, residents are upset that residency officer Arlene Law and coordinator of attendance C.W. Campbell aren’t returning phone calls.

Superintendent of Education Dr. John DeCotis said Tuesday he was not aware that phone calls were not being returned to residents, and promised to try and solve the problem.

“We always want to be responsive to questions, and I’ll get to the bottom of this situation,” DeCotis pledged.
