I have lived in Tyrone for 17 years, and have come to love the quiet “country” lifestyle that it offers.

One of Tyrone’s best assets is Shamrock Park. We need to protect and preserve this area for the benefit of all of our citizens. The park provides a wonderful green space in the center of town and can accommodate all kinds of recreational activities.

I would love to see the Founders Day celebration returned to Shamrock Park, rather than have it on the outskirts of town. With the desire to have new businesses move in to the downtown area, what better way for them to improve their visibility than to have major activities in the downtown area that draw people from all over the county?

On the other hand, we have the promise of funding from the state for a new library, and we need property to build it on, but I don’t believe it should be at the Shamrock Park location.

Fortunately, there are alternatives, some of which I hope will be discussed in the next Town Council meeting on Oct. 20. Like others on the current Town Council, I believe the library could be the cornerstone for the revitalization and redevelopment of the downtown area.

One conceptual layout has already been produced and discussed. However it has been overshadowed by the conflict on the library’s location. Change the library’s location on that conceptual plan, and the overall acceptance of that proposal could be very positive.

There are more issues that need discussing as well. For example, if the downtown area is to grow in an environmentally friendly way, we will need to implement some kind of sewer system as opposed to individual septic systems for each new project.

Who will build it, and more importantly, who will pay for it? What kind of road improvements can and should be made to accommodate the growing traffic?

These are important questions and issues that will need to be resolved in the near future, and our town government will be tasked with finding these answers. I want to be a part of that process, to help ensure we have carefully planned and controlled growth, so that we will continue to have a wonderful community in which to live and raise our families.

Thank you.

Respectfully,

David Nebergall
