Wood burning stove likely started blaze

A home off Ebenezer road just outside of Peachtree City burned down Monday night, but both people inside the home at the time managed to escape unharmed, fire officials said.

The homeowner at 838 Ebenezer Road discovered the fire as he was putting another piece of wood into a wood-burning stove insert that was added to the fireplace, said Lt. Scott Roberts of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

The homeowner called 911 and also attempted to use a garden hose to battle the blaze, but by the time firefighters arrived flames were shooting through the roof of the home, which was a log-cabin style structure, Roberts said.

The home was destroyed but the homeowner and his wife were able to recover some personal items such as jewelry, Roberts said. The couple was insured and was assisted the evening of the fire by the American Red Cross, Roberts added.

The fire was likely started in the chimney area, officials said. Roberts said there was nothing suspicious about the blaze, which was reported around 11:45 p.m.

No firefighters were hurt during the incident, Roberts said.
