A plan for up to 15 office buildings and an assisted living complex on Ga. Highway 54 got a firm thumbs down from the Fayette County Commission Thursday night.

Thomas Boynton told the board that he wanted to rezone 18.5 acres near Fayette County Hospital from A-R to O-I to build a 300-bed assisted living facility and office complex on the property where Nub’s Farm is located.

Boynton said the site would be a perfect location for an assisted living center and additional offices to support the hospital’s business. But many in the audience were not happy about the proposal, including several representatives from other facilities.

Azalea Estates’ Marshall Gill said there were already 300 beds in the county and those were not filled.

The commission agreed, and said this type of development was not appropriate for the Hwy. 54 corridor.

“I could see the cities doing this, but this is not something I’m comfortable with. This is a huge complex,” said Commissioner Linda Wells.

Commissioner Peter Pfeifer also voiced concerns about a proposed internal sewer system that would support the office buildings and assisted living complex.

“If it fails, you could have 300 people at that complex not being able to go to the bathroom,” he said.

Commission Chairman Greg Dunn said the county’s overlay ordinance for that portion of Hwy. 54 never envisioned a project with that scope.
