The Fayetteville Planning and Zoning Commission at the Nov. 11 work session had a favorable reaction to plans by Piedmont Fayette Hospital to construct an oncology center adjacent to the hospital.

Commissioners will likely vote on the project at the regular session on Dec. 2.

“We’ve chased this project through the state for the last year or so and now we have permission,” said Piedmont Fayette Support Services Vice President Tracy Cofer. “The $2.7 million linear accelerator is the heart of the program. I think it’s a really good project.”

The majority of the one-story building, approximately 9,000 square feet, will be used for oncology with the remaining 1,440 square feet used for vault-utilized linear accelerator. The one-story linear accelerator will match the existing building design and character, said city Planning and Zoning Director Eldridge Gunn.

Linear accelerators are the commonly used for external beam radiation treatments for cancer patients.

Piedmont Fayette Hospital is proposing to construct a 10,440-square-foot oncology center on the ground floor on the northeast side of the existing campus located along Ga. Highway 54.

The proposed addition will be connected to the hospital through an existing corridor leading to the existing elevators and will be blended and integrated with the current appearance, structure and mechanical systems of the hospital campus, said Gunn.

Although connected to the hospital, it will still be self-contained for out-patient accessibility and a covered public entry canopy matching the existing canopies on the east entry and west entry will be provided, Gunn said.

Cofer said plans include offering valet parking since some cancer patients have problems walking.

Responding to questions about increased traffic, Cofer said the addition of the oncology center will not make it a regional draw.
