The sand needed to make the traditional luminaries for the holiday season in Peachtree City will be available after Dec. 1 in the parking lots of Glenloch and Pebblepocket pools.

Residents are reminded that a small bucket of sand is sufficient for making enough bags to line the average driveway.

“This is a beautiful tradition that many residents, as well as entire neighborhoods, have adopted that adds charm and makes for a festive atmosphere. We will only have one sand delivery, so we hope residents remember that you only need an inch of sand to hold the small candles, and by only taking what they need, more residents can take part in this fun, family project,” noted Carolyn Stanton, manager of Leisure Programs.

For those new to the area, luminaries are typically placed along both sides of the home’s driveway.

Although some people are creative and use other containers, a white or brown paper bag (lunch bag size) is filled with an inch of sand and a tea light or small votive candle is placed in the center of the bag.

Bags are spaced a few feet apart along the driveway or front of the home. Most homes will light the bags on Christmas Eve.
