Joseph Briggs was recently named 2008 YMCA volunteer of the year.

Briggs will be honored at the annual volunteer recognition dinner being held Monday, Nov. 17, at the Cobb Galleria Centre Ballroom.

His awe-inspiring passion to help the community is one of Briggs’ great characteristics. He goes above and beyond to help the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA and has for the past 23 years.

“The Y promotes programs for the entire family. It’s a true neighborhood experience and sets a positive example for all family members, which promotes great communities and togetherness,” said Briggs. “He cares about everything from the staff to new projects he initiates.”

When Briggs first attended the Young Family YMCA, he sponsored many kids to attend summer camp. Today he is involved with the Partner With Youth annual campaign which offers financial assistance to those who cannot afford the full price of Y programs or services.

“He takes the time to share a great smile and a kind word,” said Diane Baker-King, Young Family YMCA executive director. “The word ‘no’ is not in Joe’s vocabulary.”

“I get true satisfaction, that ‘feel good experience,’ just knowing what the Y has done for me and my family,” said Briggs. “It makes a heart feel good to have other children and families share in similar experiences.”

He and his wife, Joslynn, currently live in Fayetteville.

The YMCA is a charitable organization open to people of all abilities, ages, beliefs, cultures, faiths, and incomes.

Financial assistance is available based on need.
