The Fayetteville Planning and Zoning commissioners were scheduled at the Nov. 11 work session to get their first look at expansion plans submitted by Piedmont Fayette Hospital and a proposal to construct a Goodwill Career Service Center on Banks Road.

Piedmont Fayette Hospital is proposing to construct a 10,440 square-foot building addition for an oncology center on the ground floor located at the northeast side of the existing campus located along Ga. Highway 54.

The proposed addition will be connected to the hospital through an existing corridor leading to the existing elevators and will be blended and integrated with the current appearance, structure and mechanical systems of the hospital campus, said Planning and Zoning Director Eldridge Gunn.

Although connected to the hospital, it will still be self-contained for out-patient accessibility and a covered public entry canopy matching the existing canopies on the east entry and west entry will be provided, Gunn said.

The majority of the building, approximately 9,000 square feet, will be used for oncology, with the remaining 1,440 square feet used for vault-utilized linear accelerator. The one-story linear accelerator will match the existing building design and character, said Gunn.

In another proposal, Goodwill is proposing to construct a 33,200-square-foot retail thrift store and training center adjacent to the Picadilly restaurant on Banks Road. The thrift store will total 25,200 square feet while the career center will use an 8,000 square-foot portion of the building. The property is zoned C-3 Highway Commercial.

As proposed, the building will consist of brick veneer with a metal veneer finish. An aluminum storefront with a blue metal canopy will be provided and a cast stone band with varying heights will be used to break up the building. Aluminum frames will be provided around the windows with blue fabric awnings.

Goodwill is requesting a reduction in parking spaces from 166 to 125, with 41 spaces to be shared with adjacent businesses.

Ingress and egress will be from Banks Road and Ga. Highway 85, with Banks Road being the primary entrance. City staff is recommending the addition of an 8-foot sidewalk on the north side of the driveway on Hwy. 85 to the property line to the north.

From an economic development perspective, the applicant plans to train and provide resources for area residents, said Gunn. As such, they have been working with the Fayette County Development Authority on a possible bond to assist with the project, Gunn said. The bond is predicated on the career services component of the applicant’s proposal, he said.
