Veterans honored in PTCTue, 11/11/2008 - 4:38pm
By: Ben Nelms
The Nov. 8 ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in front of Peachtree City Hall was a time of remembrance for all of Fayette County. Nearly 100 attended the observance, transforming the area around the memorial and flagpoles into a living tribute to those that have served their country in life and in death. Thirteen-year-old singer/songwriter Lindee Link sang the National Anthem and, later in the observance, a rendition of “Proud to be an American.” Made famous by Lee Greenwood, the song has achieved a special place in the American psyche in recent decades. That place in the heart was undeniable as the words flowed from the young singer’s lips. Many had tears in their eyes. Others rose quietly from their chairs and stood in silence. Speaking briefly at the remembrance were Peachtree City Leisure Director Randy Gaddo, Arnie Geiger of Peachtree City VFW Post 9949, Fayetteville American Legion Post 105 Vice Commander John Nowak and VFW Post 9949 Commander Bud Ellis. “Taps” was played at the end of the remembrance. The wailful notes split the air on that crisp fall morning, bringing with them a recognition for all those, known and unknown throughout this nation’s history, that have stood, and died, for their country. As with any remembrance of Veterans Day, the occasion was solemn, with words struggling to describe the depth of love and appreciation for those who have given their last full measure of devotion. login to post comments |
