New youth council board electedTue, 11/11/2008 - 4:10pm

A new board for the Youth Council of Fayette County was selected by a peer vote at last month’s debate and election, organizers reported. All teens between 8th and 12th grade were eligible to vote and don't have to be Youth Council members. "This is a great way for teens to hear what the candidates have to say, hear their response to questions, then vote for the candidate of their choice," said Art Sivertsen, Youth Council executive director. "Allowing the teens to be instrumental in the election process teaches them that their vote does count, and how important the process is. It also teaches the candidates the political process, especially since the Chair and Vice Chair positions were a very tightly contested race, and only one vote separated first and second place in the Chair and Vice Chair positions.” The Youth Council is currently planning two teen concerts. One acoustic concert is planned for the Glenloch recreation center on Saturday Nov. 8, and Between The Trees will be back along with the non profit organization To Write Love on Her Arms for their newly anticipated tour on Saturday Nov. 22 at the Peachtree City Christian Church. Last year’s Youth Council co-chairs Matt McMahan and Brian Huefner were recipients of the Volunteer of The Year Award for the Georgia Recreation and Park Associations 4th District. Matt is now a freshman at the University of Georgia and Brian is a Freshman at the University of Southern California. The newly elected candidates have some big shoes to fill, but are up to the task set before them. The Youth Council is raising money for future projects by selling their Youth Council shirts. The Shirts are $15 and can be purchased at the Peachtree City Recreation Administrative office at 191 McIntosh Trial from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
