By this time next week, the 2005-2006 regular season will nearly be over and the thoughts of all coaches and players will be on the region tournaments and post-season glory. For a team to advance to the state tourament in their classification they must place in the top four of the region tournament. The boys and girls teams at Creekside, Landmark Christian and Sandy Creek all have a good chance of doing just that.

Creekside’s Lady Seminoles (10-7, 3-4 in the sub region)may be playing their best ball of the season at the right time. They have won two games in a row, both by over 13 points, and, at the time this article went to press, were tied with Northgate’s Lady Vikings for third in the sub-region with three huge sub-region games remaining on their schedule. A solid finish could give them a good seeding in the tourney.

Creekside’s boys are in great shape (10-8, 7-0 in the sub-region) and are flexing their muscles over some of the weaker teams in the region. On Tuesday night the Seminoles handed the Northgate Vikings an 84-30 loss. They have gone 7-2 over their last nine games and three of their last four wins were by double digit margins. With three sub-region games left on the schedule, running the table could mean a two seed in the region tournament and a great chance of advancing to the state tournament.

Sandy Creek’s Lady Patriots (15-3, 9-0 sub region) are in a similar position. Should they run the table in the final week of the season, they are likely to enter the region tournament as the top seed and will be in excellent shape to defend the region title. They are currently riding their second seven game winning streak of the season. Only one of their last seven wins was not by a double digit margin.

The Patriot boys (9-11, 5-2 sub region) are currently in second place in the sub-region. They have won three games in a row and have a big game against a surging McIntosh team and rematches against Lithia Springs and Creekside remaining on their schedule. A good finish could capture a top four seed in the region tournament, which could help Sandy Creek’s chances at returning to the state tournament.

Landmark Christian’s girls (12-6, 7-2 sub-region) are 7-2 in 2006 and their two losses came at the hands of W.D. Mohammed, the top ranked team in Class A. What’s interesting to note is that the Lady War Eagle’s first loss to W.D. Mohammed was by 15 points, while the second loss was only by five points. Landmark is getting solid performances from the entire team and as long as the good play continues, a state tournament appearance looks very likely.

The Landmark boys (6-16, 3-5 sub-region) may not have the best record but with two wins in a row and a stretch of good play in recent weeks, the War Eagles are quickly becoming a dangerous team. The War Eagles have avenged an earlier loss to East Coweta and played a tough W.D. Mohammed team close. With a strong defensive showing and smart play from the offense, Landmark could make a serious run at capturing a state tournament bid.

Area tournaments are scheduled to start a week from Monday.
