• Fayette teens are Merit semifinalists
Seven seniors from Fayette County high schools are among the 16,000 semifinalists nationwide competing in the 54th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The students are Jennie K. Lee (Fayette County High); David C. Fratto (McIntosh High), William S. Kearney, Oian K. Zhou; Joseph D. Morrow, Ryan O’Shaughnessy (Starr’s Mill High); and Randy M. Goodheart (Whitewater High). The seniors have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards worth $35 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements. The 2009 Merit scholarship winners will be announced April through July.
• Forbes graduates from basic combat training
Army Reserve Pfc. Ashley S. Forbes has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. She is the daughter of Quintella Hauser of Fayetteville, Ga., and granddaughter of William Clethen of Sacramento, Calif. Forbes is a 2006 graduate of Jonesboro High School, Ga.
• Barth graduates from Army ROTC leadership course
Colin M. Barth graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as “Operation Warrior Forge,” at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash. The 32 days of training provide the best possible professional training and evaluation for all cadets in the aspects of military life, administration and logistical support. Although continued military training and leadership development is included in the curriculum, the primary focus of the course is to develop and evaluate each cadet’s officer potential as a leader by exercising the cadet’s intelligence, common sense, ingenuity and physical stamina. The cadet command assesses each cadet’s performance and progress in officer traits, qualities and professionalism while attending the course. Cadets in their junior and senior year of college must complete the leadership development course. Upon successful completion of the course, the ROTC program, and graduation from college, cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army, National Guard or Reserve. The cadet is a student at Clemson University. He is the son of Frank L. and Beth Barth of Peachtree City, Ga. Barth is a 2005 graduate of Starr’s Mill High School, Fayetteville, Ga.
• Sutton graduates from basic combat training
Army Pvt. Dominique Sutton has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. Sutton is the daughter of Tony and Marti Sutton of Fayetteville, Ga. The private is a 2007 graduate of Fayette County High School, Fayetteville.
• Young graduates from Green Platoon
On August 11, 2008, Spc. John S. Young graduated from Green Platoon at Ft. Campbell, Ky. Young is a medic serving in the Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) and has been assigned to Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga. He is from Peachtree City, Ga. and is the son of John and Donna Young and Randy and Luci Hough.
