Let’s honor our teachersTue, 10/14/2008 - 4:10pm

Fayette County schools have great teachers. They deserve all the credit for their hard work with our children (my husband and I have four in Fayette County Schools). I heard that because of a recent change Fayette County teachers will now have to pay more for health insurance. Is this the way we reward them for their hard work? As a result of working with students, teachers are exposed to many sicknesses. (I was an elementary school teacher for nine years, so I know about this.) They should be able to go to see a doctor without having to pay high medical insurance premiums. Everyone in my family works outside of Fayette County, so this is not written for me, but for our teachers. I would ask the powers that be to honor our teachers by not making them pay extra for health insurance. Remember the story of the goose and the golden egg? The goose laid a golden egg everyday. But the farmer became greedy and killed the goose to get the golden egg. He did not realize that the goose needed to be alive to produce the golden egg. Who is looking out for the teachers? They work hard with our children and trust that they will be able to afford health care for their families. I have heard of plans to build an aquatic center. An aquatic center would be nice, but my first priority would be our teachers. Let’s take care of our teachers. They take care of our children. Mary Kay Bacallao Brooks, Ga.
