On the weekend of August 22-24, the State Civitan Convention was held in St. Simons Island, Ga. and members of the Fayette County Civitan Club and their spouses rode out tropical storm Fay for a wonderful convention.

The Fayette County Civitan Club won multiple awards and were honored as the Georgia Civitan Club of the Year. Civitan Governor George Chandler presented the award to past President David Tolbert that served in 2006-07 for the Fayette County Club. Also, Fayette County Civitan Club was named the club that traveled the most miles for the convention and the club with the largest attendance at the state convention.

The Fayette County Civitan Club has been serving the local community since 1970. The club meets in Fayetteville on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 7 p.m. at Melear's BBQ Restaurant in Fayetteville, Ga.

The club supports The Joseph Sams School, Christian City and Camp Big Heart. In order to raise funds to support their projects, the club has Christmas tree sales (at Melear’s parking lot every December), fruit cake sales, candy boxes set up on store counters for donations, pecan sales, Paula Deen kits, a 5K road race in Fayetteville and yard sales.

The Fayette Civitan Club is also involved in Junior Olympics, International Research Center, the senior center, Scouting groups and Relay For Life. Local member Wayne Howell represented Georgia as the Civitan District Governor in 2006-07.
