Piedmont Fayette Hospital is halfway home on its request to rezone 17.85 acres north of the facility for a future day care center and additional parking. The Fayetteville Planning and Zoning Commission Sept. 23 voted to recommend the request to the City Council.

The undeveloped property is situated behind the hospital and abuts Sandy Creek Road on the east.

Piedmont Fayette’s representatives said the hospital’s only plans for the undeveloped acreage is for future use as a day care center on the west side of the annexed area and for future expansion of the number of parking spaces directly behind the hospital. Stormwater detention would be located on the east side of the annexed property near Sandy Creek Road.

More than 2,000 acres to the north and west of the hospital is primed for residential development and is the subject of the Highway 54 Task Force, whose members include the city and county, property owners, the hospital and school board.

The possibility exists for part or all of the large area directly west of the hospital and on to Tyrone Road to be annexed into the city at a future date.

The City Council will take up the rezoning request in October.
