Fayette outdoor burning ban to be lifted

The Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services is pleased to announce that the outdoor burning ban will be lifted on October 1. Residents and developers who have acquired the appropriate permit and follow basic safety precautions will be allowed to burn. Each year the department enforces an outdoor burning ban from April 30 through September 30. All residents and developers should take note of the following information in an effort to burn debris safely and for accruing a permit.

Burn Permits will be issued by phone for outdoor burning only during the period from October 1 through April 30. To obtain a permit during this time period call 770.305.5468.

Burn Permits are issued for the following conditions:

Reduction of leaves, clippings, brush and limbs on residential properties by the person in contact with the premises.

Disposal of tree limbs from storm damage.

For weed abatement, disease, and pest prevention.

Burning pile size shall be no greater than 10 feet wide, 10 feet long, and 10 feet high or 1000 cubic feet of material. No more than one pile shall be burning at a time.

The following regulations must be observed:

All burning shall take place between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm and all fires shall be completely extinguished by sunset.

All burning shall be conducted at least fifty (50) feet from any structure.

All burning shall be constantly attended until extinguished.

Fire extinguishing equipment such as a garden hose, shovel, rake or other device shall be readily available.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services retains the authority to extinguish any fires in the event that a complaint(s) are received.

Outdoor Burning Safety Tips:

Check weather conditions for dry, windy or other poor burning conditions.

Acquire a permit and listen carefully to all information at 770-460-5730, Ext 5468.

Burn ONLY leaves, straw, limbs or other yard debris, never plastics or garbage.

Never use gasoline or other flammables to start your fire.

Never leave a fire unattended.

Have a garden hose or some other means to extinguish and control the fire.

Completely extinguish the fire prior to dark.

Call 911 IMMEDIATELY if you need assistance. DO NOT WAIT.

Comply with the County wide burning ban May 1 through September 30 each year.

Land Clearing and Developers Burn Permit:

If you are a developer, contractor, or building your own home or building and are clearing land for development a commercial permit is required. You must first call the department Headquarters Monday-Friday, 8 am -5 pm at 770-305-5414.
