Residents in north Fayette may soon be addressing their mail differently.

During the Sept. 11 meeting of the Fayette County Commission, Capt. David Scarborough of the county’s EMS division said that he had been contacted by the U.S. Postal Service about the impact of switching approximately 2,200 residents into Fayetteville’s 30214 ZIP code.

Currently, the residents are split between a Riverdale ZIP code and a Fairburn ZIP code, and Scarborough said the residents approached the Postal Service about making a switch.

“The Postal Service wanted to know whether we would have any issues if a switch was made,” Scarborough told the County Commission.

The idea of swapping to the Fayetteville ZIP code is still in the preliminary stages, and Scarborough expects to have more information to present to the board at its Oct. 1 workshop session.

Fayette County also has some residents who have Jonesboro and Senoia ZIP codes, but Scarborough emphasized the change was only asked by residents in the northern part of the county.

“ZIP codes do not traditionally follow jurisdictional boundaries, and from time to time, the Postal Service will make adjustments,” he said.
