Country superstar comes home

In 1991 the world of music welcomed a new singer to the country music stage. That’s the year Trisha Yearwood debuted her first single, “She's in Love with the Boy.” The song topped the Billboard country singles chart in August 1991 and kicked off the career of one of the most successful female performing artists of all time.

This weekend, local audiences will get the chance to see the native Georgian in concert at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater in Peachtree City. Yearwood will take stage Friday and Saturday nights as part of the ongoing summer concert series at the amphitheater.

After years of dreaming and lots of hard work, Yearwood burst onto the national scene with a bang. Her self-titled debut album was certified by the RIAA of selling over two million copies, making Yearwood the first female country singer to have a debut album to be certified platinum.

Since that time, the album has been certified double platinum and of the 10 albums that followed, all have been certified gold and six have been certified platinum. Yearwood’s 1997 compilation album, “Songbook: A Collection of Hit,” has achieved quadruple platinum status.

Yearwood has 19 top singles to her credit, including such career defining hits as “Perfect Love,” “How Do I Live” and “I Fall to Pieces,” a duet with Aaron Neville which won her a Grammy Award.

Yearwood has won three Grammy Awards in all; including best country female vocal performance for “How Do I Live.” She's a two-time winner of the Country Music Association's female vocalist award, and has also netted the Academy of Country Music's top female vocalist honor. Inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1999, Yearwood has won kudos for her recurring role on the TV series “JAG” as a Navy forensic specialist.

Interestingly, Yearwood, a country hero to many, also became a hero in the more traditional sense in 1996. While flying from Nevada to New York, Yearwood saved a man's life. Francesco Maccarrone, a baggage handler, was trapped in the belly of the plane. When the plane left the gate, she heard pounding and screaming from under her seat and insisted the pilot stop the plane. After he emerged from the plane, a shaken but relieved Francesco said, “I was a big Reba fan, but now I'm an even bigger Trisha fan.”

Yearwood and long-time friend and collaborator country music legend Garth Brooks married in 2005.

This year Yearwood released her first cookbook, “Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen (Recipes From My Family to Yours),” which includes more than 120 recipes for Southern dishes, as well as full-color photos taken in and around her home.

Currently Yearwood is on tour to support her latest album, “Heaven, Heartache, and the Power of Love.”

The Monticello, Ga. native will take stage this Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m. each night. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and the opening act will take stage at 8 p.m.
