Election changes on the way this fall

For the first time in years, it’s going to be a quiet electoral season in Senoia.

This year, two City Council positions were up for election; Councilman Maurice Grover and Bobby Graham. But when the dust had settled, no one qualified to oppose the incumbents and no legal write-in candidates tossed their hats into the ring.

So, instead of a fall filled with yard signs and public forums, Senoia residents should have a relatively peaceful season. If any candidates would have qualified, the city would have had to use paper ballots for the election, instead of the voting machines and city residents would have had to cast two ballots.

The relative quiet this fall is in marked contrast to last year, when Senoia had a contentious mayoral race.

The other change in this year’s election is that students may have November 4 off as a “snow day.” School system public information officer Dean Jackson said the Board of Education is asking the state board to waive the 180-day requirement so students can have the day off.

“The voter’s office is now saying that we have more than 72,000 registered voters in the county and 10 of our schools are polling places. This would help relieve some of the congestion around the voting sites,” Jackson said.

He expects to hear back from the state board by the middle of October.
