Allows Sany project to move ahead with 228 acre site

The way has been cleared for the new Sany headquarters and production plant after three variances were approved by the Peachtree City Council Thursday night.

In addition to stream buffer changes, one variance allows the company to fill in less than five acres of wetlands to build its assembly facility, officials said. The 228 acre site is located south of the Cooper Lighting facility on Ga. Highway 74 south.

The company is setting aside a 40-acre wetland preservation area on-site and is also purchasing wetland mitigation credits for the site, said Sany attorney Rick Lindsey.

Local environmentalist Dennis Chase said he recently visited the construction site, which is being graded except for the wetland area with permission from the city. Expecting to see some erosion violations after a significant amount of rain three days before, Chase said he saw no such problems.

Chase said he has reviewed Sany’s wetland mitigation plan and he doesn’t have any reason to suspect any problems.

“This is how a project should work,” Chase said. “... The company is being very cooperative and doing a really outstanding job. They’re willing to answer questions. I’ve got to tell you, this is one of the best ones I’ve seen.”

The 40 acres of wetlands will be overseen by the Southern Conservation Trust.

Council’s approval of the variances is contingent on approval being given by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.
