Watts attends GOP gathering

For Fayette County’s Lane Watts, the opening day of the Republican National Convention typified what the party represents.

“There was a whole room set up for hurricane relief. Sen. John McCain said put country first and that’s what is happening,” said Watts.

Watts was an alternate to the 1996 convention in San Diego, but is a delegate at this year’s gathering in St. Paul, Minn.

“All the delegates are on the floor and the Georgia delegation is just to the left of the podium, behind the Arizona delegation,” he said.

While Monday’s convention activities were scaled back because of Hurricane Gustav, Watts expects the rest of the week to resemble a traditional convention.

Sen. Joe Lieberman and former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson were set to speak Tuesday night, along with a possible satellite appearance by President Bush from the White House.

Monday’s biggest story concerned the pregnancy of Republican Vice President candidate Sarah Palin’s 17-year-old daughter, Bristol. Watts said that’s not the type of political discussion that should be encouraged.

“That’s a private and family issue, and I didn’t like it when Chelsea Clinton or the Bush twins were picked on,” he said.

Watts said the enthusiasm has picked up since McCain tabbed Palin for the Vice President’s position and said the Alaska governor could address the convention Wednesday or Thursday night. Watts said John McCain is expected to accept the nomination in person Thursday night, which should propel the Republicans towards a spirited campaign this fall.
