• Youngblood graduates from basic combat training Army Pvt. Corey C. Youngblood has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. He is the son of Linda Perkins of Tampa, Fla. and brother of Lisa Gwydon of Fayetteville, Ga. • Area students named to dean's list at Virginia Tech Ashley E. Smith, of Fayetteville, Ga., and Robert D. Read, of Peachtree City, Ga., have been named to the dean's list for the spring 2008 semester at Virginia Tech. To qualify for the dean's list, students must attempt at least 12 credit hours graded on the A-F option and earn a 3.4 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the semester. Smith is a senior majoring in human nutrition, foods, and exercise in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Read is a senior majoring in history in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. • Leonard commissioned as second lieutenant Colleen A. Leonard has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force after completing the Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) program and graduating with a bachelor's degree from Samford University, Birmingham, Ala. ROTC is an educational program designed to provide college students an opportunity to be Air Force officers after completing military study courses and bachelor's degree requirements at a host college or university. The program is the largest and oldest source of commissioned officers for the Air Force, with a mission to produce highly qualified military leaders and better citizens for America. Leonard is now assigned to Altus Air Force Base, Okla. She is the daughter of Jim F. and Rheba D. Leonard of Peachtree City, Ga. In 2004, the lieutenant graduated from the Landmark Christian School, Fairburn, Ga. • Hitsos receives scholarship John A. Hitsos has received an In-College Scholarship award for three and half years at Valdosta State University. The In-College Scholarship Program is open to college freshmen and sophomores in any major. The program is divided into two selection phases, and awards Type 2, tuition capped at $15,000 per year; Type 3, tuition capped at $9,000 per year; or Type 6, tuition capped at $3,000 per year, scholarships for two or three years. To be eligible to receive an Air Force ROTC scholarship, the student must be a U.S. citizen, pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test and the Air Force ROTC physical fitness test; meet weight and body standards and pass a physical examination; have a 2.5 cumulative college grade point average; not already contracted to be a scholarship recipient; and other age and moral eligibility requirements. Hitsos is the son of John and Roxanne Hitsos of Fayetteville, Ga. • DeWerff graduates with MA Elizabeth Jane DeWerff has graduated from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus on June 8. DeWerff earned a master of arts in arts administration. • Tozour participates in leadership, honor society Samantha J. Tozour, a 2005 graduate of McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, Ga., is a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization. Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national leadership and honors organization dedicated to prompting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development, and lifelong profesional fulfillment.
