It was over almost as soon as it began. A rezoning request Aug. 19 to Coweta County Commission by Orion R.E.I. to have the 7.78 acres at Ga. Highway 154 and Manchester Drive in Sharpsburg rezoned for the construction of eight office buildings totaling 50,000 square feet was defeated by a 3-2 vote with no discussion.

The request would have the property, currently zoned (Rural Conservation (RC), rezoned to Office-Institutional (OI), Limited Business (C-1) and Commercial Neighborhood District (C-2), to accommodate an office/retail development.

Several property owners at the Aug. 14 public hearing spoke against the rezoning request.

Commissioner Leigh Schlumper moved to deny the request. Schlumper, along with Commissioners Tim Lassetter and Randolph Collins, voted to deny while Commissioner Paul Poole and Chairman Tim Higgins opposed.

The county’s Planning & Zoning Department had previously recommended approval of the proposal subject to several conditions.
