Gallopade International recently launched a new, innovative website, www.electionsforkids.com, to help children learn about the U.S. election process and get them excited about this year’s historic presidential election. The site’s most engaging activity is the opportunity to vote weekly on a wide range of topics, from election-related facts, such as which animals are used as symbols for political parties, to everyday choices, such as your favorite ice cream flavor. The site’s voting feature gives teachers a chance to bring the election process alive in the classroom, as well as gain other interesting information from the site about the political parties, the Electoral College and the candidates. “The goal of the Elections for Kids website is to encourage students to learn about and take an active role in this year’s election. With this website, we envision reaching into the classroom to excite students to learn about and discuss our country’s electoral process. We want students and teachers to have fun returning week-after-week to the site, while also finding out about the important issues facing our nation,” said Gallopade International President Michele Yother. Teachers can also use www.electionsforkids.com to supplement their classroom curriculum. The site includes valuable classroom resources such as lesson plans, hands-on activities and pertinent vocabulary, along with downloadable, reproducible tools such ballots, a voter registration application and U.S. maps to track the presidential race. A Classroom Elections Kit that can be ordered on the site includes a ballot box for hands-on classroom elections, along with the 48-page “Elections! Elections! Elections!” book, 30 “I Voted” stickers, three “Vote for Me” buttons and ballots. The kit is integrated with the mission of the Elections for Kids website of giving students firsthand experience with the voting process. The Elections for Kids website can be used by parents to help their children learn about the process of choosing an American president. Parents will be able to reinforce the importance of becoming a responsible, active citizen. Using the site as a tool, parents can demonstrate the fun and fascinating aspects of the electoral process. The website provides a safe online opportunity to help answer questions about current events and campaign topics.
