Popular Christian recording artist, multiple Grammy and GMA Dove award-winner Michael W. Smith will be providing the entertainment at Southwest Christian Care’s 16th annual benefit dinner and auction gala on Friday August 22. Smith is one of the most influential and best-selling artists in the Christian contemporary music field. Celebrating over 25 years as a recording artist, “Smitty” as he is also known, has amassed an impressive catalog of achievements. His career took off in 1982 when Smith was asked to play keyboards in a band backing up young artist Amy Grant on her “Age to Age” tour. He would eventually become Grant’s opening act as well as co-writer of many songs. Grant’s managers were so impressed with Smith’s talents they started Reunion Records just to capture his many talents. His first album, “Michael W. Smith Project” featured the very popular song “Friends,” written by Smith along with wife Debbie Davis Smith. His 20 albums have garnered multiple honors including an American Music Award, three Grammy Awards and 13 nominations as well as 40 GMA Dove Awards. In addition, he has sold more than 15 million records, accumulating 16 Gold and five Platinum albums, 31 number one radio hits, and has been named one of People Magazine’s Most Beautiful People. Smith has also scored several film projects and written 11 books. He has performed for presidents and world leaders and is a favorite of George Bush, George W. Bush, Reverend Billy Graham, and Franklin Graham with Samaritan’s Purse. Recently Smith performed in July 2007 as part of Sean Hannity’s “Freedom Concert” tour. Smith and his wife are the proud parents of five children.
