There will be a fundraiser for Joey’s Toy Box at the Thomas Crossroads Publix on Saturday, Aug. 16. Mike Hutcheson of “Dishing With Mike” will do a live show at 11 a.m. on Saturday and the fundraiser goes until 3 p.m.

Joey’s Toy Box provides support for the Child Life program at the Aflac Cancer Center & Blood Disorders Service located at the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. The Child Life Specialists provide the patients comfort and support as they are going through their healthcare experience. They walk the kids through medical procedures by utilizing puppets to show the child what he/she can expect to happen during a procedure. They provide board games, video games, movies, crayons, coloring books, reading books, puzzles, etc... for the kids while they are receiving chemotherapy or blood transfusions. If a child has had a particular rough experience, he/she can even go to the toy closet and pick out a special toy or stuffed animal to take home. Unfortunately their budget is limited and their toy closet relies mainly on donations they receive during the holidays. This is where Joey wanted to step in. He noticed that they did not have toys to meet all of the kids needs. And he definitely did not want them to run out of toys.

Joey Doolittle, a Newnan resident, succumbed to cancer on July 4 of this year. He was nine years old.
