Fayette County will hold a public hearing on its proposed millage rate, but won’t adopt a final resolution of the rate until Aug. 28.

The reason, according to Executive Assistant Carol Chandler, is that the Fayette County Board of Education had to call three more public hearings for its rate after the school board decided to increase the rate.

“Their final public hearing on their rate is the morning of Aug. 28, so we can do ours that evening,” she said.

This year’s tax digest came in at $5.3 billion dollars for real property, which is just over $158 million more than the 2007 tax digest, for a growth rate of 3 percent, but that figure includes $15 million in reassessments, said Finance Director Mary Holland.

The county is proposing to roll the rate back from 7.432 mills in the unincorporated county to 7.391 mills. In the incorporated county, residents will see their rate drop from 5.432 mills to 5.4 mills.

The public hearing starts at 7 p.m. at the county complex on Stonewall Avenue.
