Palmetto council members Jan. 16 gave their approval to an intergovernmental agreement supporting a March vote in Coweta County on a proposed 2007 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).

If passed by Coweta voters, the capitol outlay projects funds slated for Palmetto would include only the portion of the city that lies within Coweta, said Mayor Clark Boddie.

The six-year collection period is anticipated to raise an estimated $175 million. Palmetto’s portion of that amount would provide a projected $878,000 for three city infrastructure projects. Those projects, with estimated costs supplied by city engineers Keck & Wood, include $119,830 for Thurman Street sewer improvements, $399,573 for the Snowfall Terrace forced sewer main replacement and $358,685 for Snowfall Terrace Street and gutter improvements.

The current local option sales tax, set to end later in 2006, has currently generated $354,917, according to City Administrator Bill Shell.

A portion of the new SPLOST funds allocated to Palmetto totaling an estimated $48,750 would also go toward renovation of the Coweta County Courthouse.
