Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser) is a not-so-successful geologist at a university. Trevor’s lab is being shut down by the university since his research isn’t getting anywhere.

To make things worse, Trevor’s sister-in-law is dropping off her PSP-obsessed teenage son Sean (Josh Hutcherson), whose father has been missing since 1997. Sean doesn’t like Trevor very much since he doesn’t know or care very much about what Trevor does for a living.

Sean reminds Trevor of Max, his brother, who disappeared years ago on an expedition to the center of the earth. Along with Sean comes a box of his father’s possessions. When Trevor reads Max’s copy of “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and his own, Trevor finds the added handwritten notes in both the books are the same. This gives him clues about where to go to trace Max’s journey.

Against Trevor’s wishes, he lets Sean tag along with him as they go to Iceland. There they meet local mountain guide, Hannah (Anita Briem), to take them to the spot where, according to the book, Max found the center of the earth.

From then on, many perilous events occur, including a dinosaur chase, a cave-in and sharp-toothed fish.

I saw “Journey to the Center of the Earth” at the Carmike in 3D (objects seem to come out of the screen at you), and I liked it. It’s available in regular format, but I recommend you see it in 3D.

The 3D increases gradually as the movie progresses and is done beautifully. Some movies like the horrible “Spy Kids 3D” made me nauseous, but this one didn’t. The story is fun as are the characters, and if you’ve run out of ideas for a family movie, try this one.

Rated PG for intense action adventure and some scary moments.

P.S. – If you have crying babies, please don’t bring them to the movies.
