Governor Sonny Perdue has announced that Allyson Wright, a native of Peachtree City, Ga., is among 29 college students and recent graduates chosen to participate in the Governor’s Intern Program for the summer of 2008. Wright is working as an intern for the Office of Executive Appointments.

“The Governor’s internship program gives students and graduates the opportunity to serve the public while earning real world experience in a fast paced state government office environment,” said Perdue. “Our interns and fellows are enthusiastic, hard working and critical to the operation of our office. We give them a lot of responsibility, and we expect a lot from them. Many of our interns choose to enter the field of public service when their internship is over.”

Wright currently attends the University of Georgia where she is pursuing an undergraduate degree in political science.

The Governor's Intern Program, initiated in 1971, offers invaluable work experience each semester in the Office of the Governor and state agencies. During the application process, interns are matched with the state agency or division within the Governor’s Office that best meets their area of interest. All interns go through a critical competitive selection process.

The Governor’s Fellowship Program is similar to the intern program, but offers recent graduates a six-month position. Unlike interns, fellows must work full-time. The extra commitment allows fellows a more in-depth experience. The opportunity gives the new graduates a chance to experience politics on the state level before joining the staff, entering the private sector, or returning to graduate school. They, along with interns, assist the Governor’s staff in making policy, constituent service and communications decisions.
