• Anders inducted into honor society

Hannah A. Anders, of Fayetteville, has been inducted into the Samford University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta honor society for freshman students. Membership in Alpha Lambda Delta is open to full-time freshman students who earn a minimum 3.5 grade point average out of a possible 4.0 during their first semester of study and rank in the top 20 percent of their class.

• O’Connor accepts Jefferson Scholar Graduate Fellowship
 
Jefferson Scholar Graduate Fellows are the “best of the best,” scholars selected from among the most talented in the nation. Lindsay O’Connor, a native of Peachtree City, Ga., is the newest member of this prestigious group of scholars. O’Connor was accepted to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in February during Selection Weekend, concluding a long admissions process. She is one of only eight members of a prestigious Jefferson Graduate Fellow class. O’Connor completed her undergraduate studies at Tulane University in New Orleans, La., earning her degree in English. The Jefferson Scholar Graduate Fellowships are awarded to the candidates that show the most potential as scholars, and show an eagerness and willingness to share important ideas with a broad audience. The Jefferson Fellowship, awarded solely on the basis of merit, includes generous annual support enabling them to develop their talents and use them for the good of the university.

• Callahan graduates from basic military training

Sergeant Edwin Callahan has graduated from basic military training at Fort Jackson, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, he studied the army’s mission, organization and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony and received physical training and rifle marksmanship. Callahan has been assigned to Fort Benning, Ga. for advanced training. He is the son of Edwin and Deborah Callahan of Fayetteville, Ga. Callahan is a 2001 graduate of Fayette County High School and a 2006 graduate of Georgia Tech University.

• Lethbridge takes top honors

Michael Zachary “Zach” Lethbridge, a senior at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, has been accepted for membership in the Golden Key International Society. In order to be inducted, Lethbridge maintained greater than a 3.8 GPA in accounting his junior year. “It is only fitting that a top academic achiever like Michael be recognized by Golden Key,” said Alexander D. Perwich II, Golden Key's Chief Executive Officer at the induction ceremony. He is also a NROTC student training at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Along with his academic awards, Lethbridge received the following recognitions from the CMU NROTC Unit. He received the National Sojourners Award for Americanism, The Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarship Award of $500, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Award. On May 10, he was notified that he won the $2,000 Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association Medal of Honor Scholarship Award given to the top United States Marine Corps ROTC student in the nation. He will receive his award this month in a ceremony in Washington D.C. Additionally he has been nominated for the Legion of Valor of the United States of America Award and the First Command Financial Planning Award. Lethbridge recently completed a six week Marine Corps OCS course in Quantico, Virginia. He has been named to the dean’s list for all seven semesters he has been in school at Duquesne. He is the son of Mark and Linda Lethbridge of Fayetteville and a 2005 grad of Our Lady of Mercy.

• Fayette County students awarded scholarships

The following students from Fayette County have been awarded scholarships to attend Gordon College for the 2008 academic year: Janine I. Baldwin, Francis Wood Wilson Foundation Scholarship; Nathaniel Scott Bowen, Dr. James Pharo and Joseph Pharo Scholarship; Christine Annalese Thacker, Lewis A. and Manona B. Akins Scholarship; Lacy Carol Thompson, David Bishop Scholarship; Tiffany Marie Beining, W.L. Luther Jones Scholarship; and Jessica Lane Turner, Thomas and Mary Hall Griffin Scholarship. Gordon College, in Barnesville, is a residential state college of the University System of Georgia and offers more than 80 programs of study to more than 3,700 students.
