The first time you see the comedienne known as “Mrs. Hughes” you might think, “She could be my neighbor.” She’s just about the last person you’d expect to see performing on stage. Carol Hughes began her comedy career when she was 40. Says Carol, “Years ago I heard Merv Griffin interview Phyllis Diller, and she said she started doing comedy when she was 39. I remember saying to myself, ‘I could do that.’” And she did. Her career took off quickly and now there are Mrs. Hughes fans all over the world. Known as “America’s funniest grandma,” she appeals to a wide age group, especially the Baby Boomer crowd.

About Mrs. Hughes, the late Merv Griffin said, “She’s my new favorite funny star.” When Griffin discovered Mrs. Hughes, he instantly made her the comedy star of his revue, “Love and Kisses,” at resorts in Atlantic City. Since then she has appeared in several casino production shows and has opened for Crystal Gayle, Lou Rawls, Brenda Lee and others.

Hughes will perform on Saturday, July 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bel Âge – a retreat for women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and better hosted Fayette Senior Services. The retreat is designed especially for adult women to enjoy a day of fun centered on common interests. Other featured guests include Executive Chef Todd Rossi, who will dazzle the audience with culinary demonstrations and the “Fitness Diva” Dawn Davis, will prove that getting fit can be easy…and fun! Personal growth and relationship authority, Dr. James Hughey will tell how to achieve your personal best at any age. Former Fayette Woman Magazine cover woman and senior national sales director for Mary Kay, Inc., Nancy Bonner, will share practical beauty secrets for each stage of life, and Kim Westwood, the owner of A Blue Lady Florist will demonstrate how to create exciting floral décor to brighten any home.

“Bel Âge is the French word for ‘beautiful age’ and the staff at Fayette Senior Services believes that age is a mindset…and that you are beautiful at any age,” said Debbie Britt, Executive Director. Britt adds, “The men and women who are members of our Life Enrichment Center are age 50 and better and we strive to create an environment that is positive toward aging. “Bel Âge is simply a day that is devoted to women who want to celebrate their ‘beautiful age.’”

Proceeds from the event will benefit Meals on Wheels and Fayette Senior Services, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing a wide variety of programs and services for the emotional, social and physical well-being of older adults in Fayette County. The agency also provides important social services for seniors with specialized needs such as Meals on Wheels, case management, transportation, information and referrals and in-home services/respite care.

The event will be held at Fayette Senior Services’ new Life Enrichment Center located at 4 Center Drive in Fayetteville (across from the Fayette County Justice Center). The doors will open at 9 a.m. Tickets are on sale at Fayette Senior Services. A “Girlfriend Special” is being offered until July 10. Buy one ticket at the regular price and get a $15 discount off of a second ticket. Ticket prices are $55 for FSS Center members and $65 for the general public. A special lunch will be provided along with free door prizes and a host of other surprises are in store for guests. Call about church and other group discounts. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Advanced ticket sales only, no tickets will be sold at the door.
