Volleyball team featuring three locals wins national championshipTue, 07/01/2008 - 12:50pm

What a way to culminate their final club volleyball season and careers as members of Atlanta’s A5 Mizuno 18 Bob’s team! Standout players Mary Chaudoin [Starrs Mill High School], Olympia Haney [Sandy Creek High School], and Monique Mead [Landmark Christian High School] entered the USA Volleyball National Championships last Thursday in Dallas as the top seed in the 18 year old National Division. To qualify to participate in the National Championships, their 18 Bob team won the southeastern regional championship outright two months ago in Atlanta. Over 9,600 players from across the U.S.attended the event in Dallas with teams from 12 years of age up to18. Playing top teams and 14 matches over four days, 18 Bob continued their winning ways resulting in a national championship final against nationally recognized Amarillo Elite from Amarillo Texas. Playing on center court in front of over 2,000 spectators Sunday afternoon, 18 Bob defeated Amarillo Elite 22-25, 25-20, 15-12 to earn their National Championship crown. Team 18 Bob also included standout players from Atlanta high schools such as Northview, Marist, Woodward, Wesleyan, Blessed Trinity, and Forsyth. The team was led by Assistant Coach Kendall Webster and Head Coach Bob Westbrook. Chaudoin, Haney, and Mead will continue their volleyball careers with full scholarships in the Big Ten, SEC, and ACC Conferences respectively. Chaudoin will attend Indiana University, Haney will play for Auburn, and Mead will join Georgia Tech. login to post comments |
